What we learned from teaching 2.11 Statistical Reports – Marion Steel – Epsom Girls College

We started 2012 by teaching Statistical Reports to 5 year 12 classes. This is a chance for you to learn from our mistakes. I will share the highs and lows from our experience of teaching and assessing this standard, as well as sharing some resources. There are a lot of files and to make downloading easier they have all been saved in ZIP format.

Booklet

Bootstrapping – Sophie Wright – Mount Roskill Grammar School

This is a repeat workshop from the Statistics day in 2011. It will cover the sampling method “bootstrapping” and Sophie has some insight as to how this is going to be used at level 3 due to her TLRI research. The resources for this workshop can be found here

The history of Mathematics with a Statistics focus – Mala Nataraj – Selwyn College

This workshop will be covering ‘Using history of mathematics in teaching and learning’. Since the focus for this saturday is on Statistics, this will include the history of statistics as well.

Teaching and Assessing Simulations at Year 12 – some recent experiences – James Robb - Mcauley high

The new Standards now separate Simulations from the Normal Distribution and give Simulations their due weight. This workshop will be a forum for those who have taught the new AS 91268 to share their experiences and resources, and for those who haven’t yet to get some ideas.

Algebra AS2.14 with a mathematical context. – David Lear – Diocesan Girls School

This workshop will look at two different ways to assess the standard – a mathematical context vs a real life context. We will look at some samples of student’s work in a mathematical context and compare to the schedule to analyse the difference between achieved merit and excellence. The task is 2.14 Apply systems of equations in solving problems.

AS 2.2 Graphs – Brenda Mcnaughton – Team Solutions

I will discuss an alternative method of teaching students graphs and present a task that uses a ‘Mathematical context’ rather than a ‘real-life context’. Resources will be provided for teaching the topic as well as a paper copy of a task that you could use. The task will not be put on the website so that teachers attending can use it with confidence in their schools.

Randomisation – Marie Fitch – The University of Auckland

This is a repeat workshop from the statistics day 2011. The resources for this workshop can be found here

Alternatives to the one question method for level 2 – Rory Barrett – Macleans college

Despite initial enthusiasm and endorsement from MOE and NZQA this method of assessment has proved completely unmanageable and a waste of time. This workshop will look at alternative ways of assessing level 2 achievement standards.

Assessment writing for AS2.9 – Ricky Pedersen – St Peter’s College

This workshop will be an opportunity for teachers to work together to write an assessment task for AS2.9 – Use statistical methods to make an inference. At the end of the workshop we will have produced resource(s) for you to take away and use in your department.

Critical Issues in the Didactics of Mathematics…

From semester 1 2012 the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences at AUT University offers a new postgraduate paper in mathematics education “Critical Issues in the Didactics of Mathematics” that can be of interest to school mathematics teachers. It could be
a useful paper for your professional development. On completing the paper you will receive the Certificate of Proficiency. The paper can also lead to upgrading your qualification to a postgraduate level: Postgraduate Certificate in Science (PgCertSc) or Postgraduate Diploma in Science (PgDipSc) or MSc. It is a 30 credit paper with 24 contact hours. The remaining hours are for independent learning. It is delivered partially online and partially on campus as a block course during
4 days over the school holiday. Parking can be arranged at AUT for free. The paper is very practical and the teaching/learning environment is friendly and supportive.

Topics covered include: rigour, proof, argumentation, justification, verification, analysis as part of mathematical culture, counterexamples in mathematics as a teaching approach, paradoxes and sophisms in teaching/learning, puzzle-based learning as a pedagogical strategy, provocations in mathematics, mistakes in textbooks and misuses of mathematics as a teaching and learning resource.

The assessment include: 2 home assignments and a written report of
a project that reflects your own teaching practice.

The cost of the paper is about $1900 including GST and all levies.

It would be much appreciated it if you could share information about this paper with your colleagues who might be interested.

For more information on the paper please e-mail Sergiy Klymchuk at sergiy [dot] klymchuk [at] aut [dot] ac [dot] nz
