9am: Guest Speaker : Anna-Marie Fergusson

Searching for meaningful sampling in apple orchards, YouTube videos, and many other places!

In the opening address, Anna-Marie Fergusson will share her ideas and adventures with developing more meaningful learning tasks for sampling. Using the “Apple orchard” exemplar task, She will present some guidelines for “renovating” existing tasks and introduce some new opportunities for teaching sample-to-population inference in the context of modern data and associated technologies

WS1A Expanding your toolkit for teaching statistics : Anna- Marie Fergusson

In this workshop, we will explore some tools and apps that I have developed to support and develop student’s statistical understanding. We will also discuss some general principles for selecting tools for teaching and learning statistics. Bring along a laptop and have fun trying out an interactive dot plot for building understanding of mean and standard deviation, a modelling tool for building understanding of distributional variation, tools for carrying out experiments online and some new tools for collecting data through sampling.

You’ll find out what life is like in our Junior School now and how students learning is being organised to help meet the needs of 21st century learners. You’ll get the chance to relive your own 3rd form year as if you too were only 13 years old in 2019! The presentation is made through the lens of the Mathematics learning area and you’ll also have the chance to join the discussion around what these changes mean for the teaching and learning of Mathematics.
