Plenary Speaker 

Dillon Mayhew – Bevan Werry Speaker  Victoria University, Wellington   

About seven years ago, I became involved in mathematics outreach activities in Wellington schools. More recently, I have been visiting schools and mathematics associations around New Zealand in my capacity as the NZAMT Bevan Werry speaker.

My ambition with outreach exercises has always been to communicate the fascination I have for mathematics, and to discuss areas of mathematics that I think are beautiful and profound. Recent topics that I have covered in activities include probability and the theory of computation.

In this talk I will discuss some of my experiences as the Bevan Werry speaker, and run through some of the activities I have supervised.

He will describe how this has changed the way the classes are taught and how the students learn.

He will demonstrate some of the Apps he has found useful and some of the resources he has created.

Collaborative teaching might be perceived as problematic when it comes to timeframes and curriculum outcomes for different learning areas, but powerful learning connections are how learners engage inside the classroom.  The by product – motivating kids in areas like maths by having different contexts of learning (eg. maths in physical context). Discover how to co-construct a learning module/unit of work with learning area(s) that enables real world connections to be seen across the school.

Title: Unit Planning

A look at using open ended questions and student misconceptions and lead unit planning. This method is currently used in planning for Junior School (Years 9 & 10) but is applicable to Senior School as well.

Disciplinary Literacy – keeping Mathematics in the foreground

An unintended consequence of the literacy push in our Mathematics and Statistics classrooms has been the confusion for some students about what is valued in Mathematics – for example: accuracy, abstracting, concise working and logical problem solving.  This workshop will offer an alternate approach to literacy and provide an opportunity to discuss what we want our students to value.

The Statistical Education of Teachers (SET): an American Statistical Association policy document

The American Statistical Association (ASA) has as one of its strategic priorities K-12 (NZ 1-13) teacher preparation in Statistics. The release and widespread adoption of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSM) in the United States, this country’s first national standards, have dramatically increased the expectations for teaching statistics especially in grades 6 through 12. The U.S. Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences (CBMS) identified the statistical preparation of teachers as an area of concern in The Mathematical Education of Teachers 2 (MET2) document, released in 2012. The SET document, a companion to the MET2 document, is ASA’s response to expanding the MET2 recommendations for answering the question: what preparation and support do K-12 (NZ 1-13) teachers need to successfully support students’ learning of Statistics?  This workshop will briefly outline the goals of SET, provide sample recommendations, sample examples of the statistical content teachers across all grades need to know, and sample assessment. This document is written for both the U.S. and international audience of school level teachers. The document was released publicly on the ASA website April 15, 2015.

A fun approach to number, geometry and algebra using materials that will inspire awe

A workshop for teachers wishing to engage students more fully in familiarisation and fun of mathematics.

No formulas needed, though it is fun to work out why it works (extra for experts)

Steven is a senior lecturer at AUT in education, and has a passion for mathematics.  He has presented before at the AMA day – thinking about calculus with blocks.

He has a background in Montessori education, and established New Zealand’s first Montessori High School.

Calcex 2019 – Tuesday 24th September

Calcex now in its 3rd year has 49 teams from 28 schools competing across Auckland in Gisborne and Manawatu –  its not too late to enter a team  or host a competition

Calcex questions are drawn from L3 calculus  and teams compete locally at a host school.  Read more
