AMA seeks to promote, support and improve statistical and mathematical education in the Auckland region.

AMA fosters cooperation and stimulates discussion. It shares ideas, strategies, research findings, materials and information using its newsletters, conferences and workshops, and via this website.

NZQA Short Survey – digital tools for assessment

NZQA have been trialing digital assessments over the past few years. This year 2 of the standards being trialed are:

  • AS91262 – Apply calculus methods in solving problems 
  •  AS91586 – Apply probability distributions in solving problems.

The 2020 AGM will be held directly following the address on the NCEA review by Rob Mill, Ministry of Education. This will be followed by light refreshments and choice of workshops/discussion groups in conjunction with the AMA Term 1 Saturday Morning

Primary Maths Day: To Infinity & Beyond. March 14th

A full day of learning for teachers of mathematics and statistics follow the keynote in which Dr Lisa Darragh  will present a model for teaching mathematics that encompasses the good parts from the many reforms that maths education in NZ has seen over the years.  She will provide some direction into a mathematics pedagogy that may suit all teachers and learners. Happy New Year & Welcome to 2020

2020 brings a new year and a new decade.


Welcome to all our new teachers, congratulations to those that have taken on new roles and responsibilities.

We also welcome a new kaiārahi, Marie Hirst, to our Networks of Expertise team. Marie is a skilled and knowledgeable educator with many years experience facilitating effective mathematics professional learning and development with schools from Years 0-8.

First up on the calendar is the  Primary Maths Seminar day on pi day, Saturday March 14th.  Information will be posted here as it becomes available

The following weekend, March 21, we have our first AMA Saturday morning. We have Rob Mill & Lauren Burr from Ministry of Education opening the morning. They will share with us the latest updates to the NCEA change package.

Our AGM will also be held on March 21st. Watch for emails in the upcoming weeks with more information.

AMA are looking forward to bringing you professional learning opportunities  that help you connect and collaborate with your colleagues.

New Online Journal for Statistics & Data Science

Statistics and Data Science Educator is an online journal set up for teachers by members of the New Zealand Statistical Association (NZSA) Education Committee under the auspices of NZSA. It has peer-reviewed lesson plans for teachers at all levels, early childhood to graduate.

Calcex 2019 – Tuesday 24th September

Calcex now in its 3rd year has 49 teams from 28 schools competing across Auckland in Gisborne and Manawatu –  its not too late to enter a team  or host a competition

Calcex questions are drawn from L3 calculus  and teams compete locally at a host school.  Read more
