Thank you all the teachers who organise training, vans, pick-ups, and pizza. Without your efforts prior to the night of the competition, we could not have such a huge number of students running, problem-solving, and generally have an exciting time doing maths.

Thank you to the students who attend early morning trainings and lunchtime prep, all in the name of problem-solving. That you care enough to give up your time to learn the rules and take part, is truly a delight. Well done too, for continuing to try to answer as many questions as possible in the short time allowed, the fact that some of you can answer them all in truly amazing. You have no idea of the joy you bring to your teachers.

Thank you to the runners from each team who manage to keep up the high octane running that they start with, all the way through the 30 minutes of competition, you transmit the energy and excitement to all the parents and families and teachers in the audience.

Thank you to all the parents, caregivers and families that sometimes sit in the spectator’s chairs, and sometimes jump up and down and generally give encouragement to those on the floor, running and problem-solving.

Thank you to the markers and scorers, without you we really could not have such a huge competition. Your excitement when you are working is there for all to see. Thank you for all your care of the teams and for insisting on fairness to all.

Again, this year we had over 500 teams and that means over 2000 students from year 7 to 10 who came to Mathex over the two evenings. We are nearly full, especially in Year 8. You would have seen the difficulties in accommodating all the teams, in the spirit of fairness, if your teams’ numbers change, please re-register as the final registration is the one we use. We understand that circumstances change, so if your school is unable to attend, please re-register with zero teams. Also, please help your teams find their tables by pointing to the name plates. They will not be far away.

We hope that the orange pens were taken home and that you will think of Mathex until the next one comes around in August 2025.

And lastly, thank you to all the people from Auckland Mathematical Association and the Primary Mathematics Association, and this year, student teachers from the University of Auckland who use blu-tack for team name plates and scores, tape arrows on carpets, and make sure everyone is safe by taking care of the students on the floor on the stadium. And a heartfelt thank you to the Casio Man, Grant, who has sponsored this event again as always.

See you in 2025 – Wednesday August 19 (year 9 & 10) and Thursday August 20 (year 7 & 8)  – we are hoping for great weather as we had this year.
