Congratulations to all those honoured in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, particularly those honoured for services to education.

Dame Karen Poutasi, who retired as Chief Executive of the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) in April after leading the organisation for 14 years, has been appointed a Dame Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to education and the state.

Maureen Corby is a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for services to early childhood education and Professor John Nacey for services to health and education.

Officers of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM) included Barbara Ala’alatoa for services to education, Mary Holm for services to financial literacy education, Rosemary Du Plessis for services to women and education, Thomas Rainey for services to music and music education, James Tomlin for services to art education and Āni Wainui for services to Māori language education.

Members of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) included Russell Burt for services to primary education and Lois Chick, Sandra Jenkins, Dr Kevin Knight, Donald MacLean, Dr Beverley Milne and Graham Preston for services to education, Dr Roberta Hunter for services to mathematics education, Dr Sarah Leberman for services to women, sport and tertiary education, Donald Long for services to literature and education, particularly Pacific language education, Lynette Te Aika for services to Māori language education, Ngareta Timutimu for services to Māori and education, Joan Whittaker for services to heritage preservation and music education, Lloyd Whittaker for services to heritage preservation and music education and Maria Winder for services to music education.

Companions of the Queen’s Service Order (QSO): Clare Wells for services to early childhood education.

Queen’s Service Medal (QSM) included Dawn Elliott for services to art education, Afamasaga Rasmussen for services to education and the Pacific community, Lynn Smith for services to dance education, and Malcolm Walker for services to sport and education.
